Remodeling After the Hurricane

Shingle Roof Repair

Shingle Roof

No one doubts the destruction that has been left behind Hurricane Sandy. For homeowners it is a time of rebuilding and many of the scheduled home remodeling projects have been put on hold for more pressing matters. Some damage is too extensive and must be handled by a professional, licensed contractor. This is typically due to safety issues. But there are several home remodeling projects that can be done by the homeowner, even if they have to wait on a contractor to do other things. Here are some of the home remodeling projects that can (and some should) be done after the hurricane.

Painting Projects

If you were anywhere close to the region hit by the hurricane, it is likely that the exterior paint on the house was damaged by the driving wind or the high waters. Exterior house painting is something that can be done and it is likely to be necessary at this point, especially if there was water damage. Do a thorough inspection of the outside of the house before beginning. You will want to look for any cracks so that you can seal them. For areas that are damaged extensively you may have to replace them. The entire exterior surface should be sanded. This includes areas that were and were not repaired. After the sanding is completed, apply one coat of primer and then apply two coats of paint.

Carpet Cleaning

After the hurricane, you may notice that the carpets are all of a sudden in poor shape. Sometimes there is a lot of water damage from flooding. Other times, it can just be badly soiled from all the excessive traffic that has occurred. If it is damaged too badly, it will most likely need to be replaced. If it does not need to be replaced, you will want to clean it whether or not there was any flooding that occurred. This will help reduce the chances of mold and mildew growing in the carpeted areas.

Remodeling the Basement

After the hurricane might be a very good time to remodel the basement portion of the house. By this time you may have figured out where the trouble areas are. One home remodeling hint would be to install a sump pump. This can be beneficial if there is another instance of flooding as it will pump excessive water out of the basement areas of the home. It’s also a good time to tear out anything that was damaged by flood water. It is important to remove any sheetrock or other substances that have absorbed water. If left alone they can give mold and mildew a place to grow and these can be health hazards. This makes remodeling the basement a very good idea after the hurricane.

Replacing the Roof

The roof of a building can take a beating during a hurricane and the wind can literally rip off some types of shingles. This is a good time to go ahead and remodel the roof of your house. Inspect it carefully to see how much damage may have occurred. If you have roof repair included in your insurance policy, they may pay to have it replaced. Or it may be possible for you to pay the difference and go ahead and replace the entire roof.
